Welcome to or back to Bella’s World, today I’m talking about parakeets in Rome. On holiday a few days ago my family and I were frequently spotting parakeets. Parakeets live in Southeast Asia, Africa and tropical South America. However are now in Italy despite not being native.

While trudging to our hotel (we are not use to temperatures above 18c) my dad looks up to the sky and I do the same. All of a sudden, a bright green, chattering bird flies above us. We realise that was a parakeet. Specifically a Monk Parakeet. I began to become curious, so I researched!

There are multiple reasons why Monk parakeets and Rose – Ringed Parakeets live in Rome. I’ll get started with the pet trade. Decades ago parakeets were ripped from their habitats and sold all around Europe. Some sold directly to regular people others sold to aviaries. In a matter of months they began to escape from their homes. Over the years their population skyrocketed and they rule over Rome.

The other reason is climate change (again). In their habitats it has become to hot for the parakeets so they fly around looking for new homes. So after an arduous journey they land in Rome. Rome sits at comfortable temperatures of about 19 – 30 degrees. Perfect for parakeets so with the escaped birds their arrival that only helped boost the population. However this isn’t great as they reek havoc on the environment. They eat the crops and destroy farms cutting down on food.

Please comment your favourite bird and don’t forget to like and follow. This was an epic in length! Thank you for reading.
